Layout, labelling and referencing All graphs, charts, drawings, diagrams and photographs should be numbered consecutively as figures according to where they come in the text (e.g. Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3). All tables should be numbered using a separate sequence (e.g. Table 1, Table 2).

In this activity, you are going to study a graph showing data about international student numbers on a particular course at a UK university, and then practise writing a simple description of the data it shows.
Determine the general trend of the graph. In a picture graph, look for the line with the highest amount of pictures. For a bar graph, look for the highest bar. For a line graph and a scatter plot, look at the slope of the line. If the line is pointing to the upper right corner, then the slope is positive.Finally, if any part of the figure was reproduced, the originator should be consulted for permission and then referenced.
